History

Telkom University Jakarta Campus is part of Telkom University in accordance with the Decree of the Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology number 115/E/O/2023 dated January 25, 2023. This campus is a continuation of the transformation of the Shandy Putra Jakarta Telecommunication Engineering Academy, which was established in 2002 and changed to the Telkom Jakarta Institute of Technology in 2021.

Telkom Institute of Technology Jakarta or abbreviated as ITTelelkom Jakarta is a private university owned by the Telkom Education Foundation. ITTelkom Jakarta is a transformation of the Sandhy Putra Jakarta Telecommunication Engineering Academy or more commonly known as the Jakarta Telkom Academy or Akatel Jakarta which has been operating since May 13, 2002. Here is a brief explanation of the history of ITTelkom Jakarta.

 

Telkom University Jakarta was born from the vision of the Telkom Education Foundation (YPT) to provide quality education evenly by integrating higher education institutions under the auspices of YPT. Previously, Telkom University was the result of the merger of several higher education institutions in Bandung, such as IT Telkom, IM Telkom, Telkom Polytechnic, and STISI Telkom. Based on the success of the merger and to expand access to quality education, YPT continued the merger of higher education institutions in various cities in Indonesia.

In Jakarta, Telkom Institute of Technology Jakarta became the first higher education institution to be merged into Telkom University and changed to Telkom University Jakarta in accordance with the Decree of the Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology number 115/E/O/2023 dated January 25, 2023. This ongoing transformation confirms the commitment to producing superior generations with global competitiveness.

ITTelkom Jakarta was established on June 2, 2021, in accordance with the Decree of the Minister of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, number 232/E/O/2021. ITTelkom Jakarta is a transformation of the Sandhy Putra Jakarta Telecommunication Engineering Academy or more commonly known as the Jakarta Telkom Academy or Akatel Jakarta, which has been operating since 2002. ITTelkom Jakarta was founded based on the ideals of the academic community formulated in its vision statement, namely to become an international standard university based on Information and Communication Technology with a focus on applications in the creative industry, digital economy and entrepreneurship to support increasing the competitiveness of the Indonesian nation. The change in form to an institute is intended as an effort to increase institutional capacity, the realization of the ideals of the academic community to develop contributions to the implementation of the Tridharma of Higher Education for a wider and stronger society, to anticipate the dynamics of the development of higher education, and to respond to the increasingly rapid development of community needs in accordance with the development of science and technology and Industry 4.0.

As a vocational institution under LLDIKTI III, Akatel Jakarta always strives to improve the quality of the institution and in 2019, Telkom Jakarta Academy achieved the 100 Best Vocational Universities award from the Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education on September 2, 2019.

Akatel Jakarta also managed to achieve several other achievements in 2019. Akatel Jakarta was able to rank 63rd based on the ranking of the Ministry of Research, Technology and Higher Education and the clustering of Region III Jakarta. This is an achievement and a challenge for the Telkom Jakarta Academy to be even better in terms of the Tridharma of Higher Education, governance, human resources (HR), students, and even alumni.

Akatel Jakarta always follows the development of positive issues related to Education. One of them is UI Green Metric organized by the University of Indonesia. Akatel Jakarta managed to obtain a ranking of 71 UI Green Metric World University Ranking on December 3, 2019. In addition, in the same year, Akatel Jakarta managed to obtain a ranking of 4148 in the Webometrics World University Ranking.

The improvement of the Akatel Jakarta education quality management system has been continuously carried out since its establishment until 2018. In 2018, Telkom Jakarta Academy adopted an international management system and was certified ISO 19001:2015 on May 31, 2018 by Bureau Veritas.

Still in 2018, as an institution that has been established for quite a long time, Telkom Jakarta Academy feels the need to improve its quality by registering an application for Higher Education Accreditation (APT). Telkom Jakarta Academy received a B predicate from the National Accreditation Board for Higher Education (BAN-PT) on July 24, 2018 in accordance with Decree Number 156/SK/BAN-PT/Akred/PT/VII/2018.

The foundation of the education quality management system and governance of Akatel Jakarta which has started to run well, then in 2018 it was declared as the year of creativity and innovation. In this year, Akatel Jakarta held the first national seminar, namely Centis.

In 2017, Akatel Jakarta re-applied for the expired D3 Telecommunication Engineering Study Program Accreditation (APS). By improving the quality and educational facilities, Akademi Telkom Jakarta again obtained APS with a B predicate for the D3 Telecommunication Engineering study program.

At the beginning of its journey until 2015, Akatel Jakarta became a higher education institution under the auspices of the Sandhykara Putra Telkom Foundation (YSPT). With the policy of PT. Telkom regarding the merger of foundations, in 2015 Akatel Jakarta was transferred to the Telkom Education Foundation (YPT). The Telkom Education Foundation (YPT) is an affiliate of PT. Telekomunikasi Indonesia (Persero) which manages a higher education institution, namely Telkom University.

After 10 years of operation, in 2012 Akatel Jakarta applied for Study Program Accreditation (APS) for the first time. Preparation for this accreditation process has been prepared since 2010. Despite various limitations, but with hard work and strong determination, in accordance with SK NUMBER 015/BAN-PT/Ak-XII/Dpl-III/VII/2012 Akatel Jakarta was able to obtain APS with a B predicate for the D3 Telecommunication Engineering Study Program.

Initially, Akatel Jakarta used the same building as SMK Telkom Jakarta. The construction of the Akademi Telkom Jakarta building in Daan Mogot began one year after the establishment of Akatel Jakarta. Initially, the Akatel Jakarta land was used as the SMK Telkom Library, a telephone booth (wartel) and a prayer room. The construction of the building was built in stages for approximately one year. The reason for moving lectures from the old building (SMK Telkom) to the new building was due to cultural differences between students and students. In 2005, the administrative process and lectures began to be implemented in the new Akatel Jakarta building.

The process of the formation of Akatel Jakarta cannot be separated from the establishment of SMK Telkom Sandhy Putra Jakarta (now SMK Telkom Jakarta) in 1992 and located at Plaza Telkom Slipi. In 2000, SMK Telkom Jakarta officially moved to Jalan Daan Mogot, Cengkareng-West Jakarta.

The establishment process of Akatel Jakarta began with the proposal of Mrs. Nasution (Head of the Sandhykara Putra Telkom Foundation to Mr. Drs. Adang Ridwan (Principal of SMK Telkom Jakarta) who had the desire to establish an academy. The Sandhykara Putra Telkom Foundation (YSPT) is an affiliate of PT. Telekomunikasi Indonesia (Persero) which manages early childhood education institutions, elementary education, secondary education to higher education. Seeing the prospect of telecommunications majors which are still rare especially in DKI Jakarta and the needs of the industrial market to develop SMK Telkom to a higher level equivalent to universities and directing graduates to be ready to go directly into the field are the main reasons for the establishment of Akatel Jakarta.

The process of establishing Akatel Jakarta at that time was not easy, many personnel were involved in the preparation of files both from internal and external campuses. The contribution of lecturers from the Purwokerto Telkom Academy and teachers from SMK Telkom Jakarta also played a role in the establishment of Akatel Jakarta. In early 2002 the files for establishing Akatel Jakarta were submitted and not long after, precisely on May 13, 2002, the Sandhy Putra Jakarta Telecommunication Engineering Academy officially became one of the private universities in West Jakarta with one study program, namely D3 Telecommunication Engineering.
